The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), a pan-African organisation bringing together 85 public- and private-sector audiovisual media organisations, reaffirms its role and responsibility in promoting an inclusive, transparent and accountable media environment serving development and democracy.
Aware of the challenges posed by disinformation, hate speech, inequalities in access to information and technological disruption, AUB recognises Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a strategic lever to strengthen trust in media and professional journalism, develop citizens’ critical thinking and resilience to media content, encourage active and informed participation in democratic life, and support the digital transformation of African media.
By joining the Global Partnership for Media and Information Literacy, AUB commits to:
1. Integrate MIL into its strategic policies and programmes as a cross-cutting component of its work in support of African public media.
2. Support its members in developing and implementing internal MIL policies and initiatives.
3. Undertake concrete actions to encourage and facilitate its members’ participation in the Global Partnership, particularly through awareness-raising, information and technical support.
4. Develop partnerships and synergies with UNESCO, regional and international organisations, universities and civil society to strengthen media and information literacy across Africa.
5. Train and raise awareness among African media professionals on integrating MIL into editorial production and newsroom governance.
6. Highlight and share African experiences in MIL at regional and global levels by actively contributing to the Global Partnership’s exchange platforms.
Through this commitment, AUB confirms its determination to play a leading role in building a more inclusive, resilient African media ecosystem grounded in democratic values, in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
